Oak Park United against Slumlords

Oak Park United against Slumlords was founded by Robbin Ware, who was instrumental in anti-racial profiling work and the former local head of the NAACP. We know that prostitution and drug pushing can only exist in a neighborhood when absentee landlords rent to those types of criminals without screening. We know that our property values go down when slumlords won't paint, clean up debris, etc.

We picketed the home of the infamous James Wheeler, a slumlord who was prosecuted as a criminal by the City and County of Sacramento. We then picketed Bob Odom at his place of business and his home. His properties on San Jose Way, for example, were eyesores.

We work hand in hand with the POP officers and Code Enforcement. We have achieved great changes in how SHRA operates in Oak Park, an example is the fencing around their property on 5th Avenue. We have worked with members of the press like Andy Furillo of the Bee and Channel 3. We have gotten the City and Cal Trans to clean up junk cars and debris. Our current chair is Ron Emslie.

>> We meet the fourth Thursday of every month at the Oak Park Community Center at 6 pm, usually in the Art Room.<<
